Destination Wedding on the South Coast at Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay
Matt + Suze celebrated in a carefree setting
Their first look
Breaking with tradition, Suze + Matt chose to go with a first look as part of their day. It’s often a playful occasion. We set off to explore Booderee National Park, to get a sneaky pre-wedding shoot in at this wild place. They took the chance to get adventurous, braving some big rocks. Taking a wander into town, we went exploring some old boatsheds I’d found scouting around a day earlier. (It’s something I love doing, working out ahead where I can take a couple to open up the possibilities on the day.)
The ceremony was held at White Sands, overlooking Jervis Bay. As it was a sunny day, we got creative with the dappled light. That made for some moody images, as did the sun setting over Hyams Beach.
Our couples typically don’t go for everyday wedding convention. Wanting to express who they are, they can set their own rules. Not just into the details of décor and gowns, they tend to add elements that say something about who they are. Here their celebrant made a statement about equal rights and opportunities.
The difference in sentiment
I try not to slip into wedding clichés. You know, aim not to be your everyday wedding photographer. This in mind, there’s a place for what I call ‘real sentiment’. Moments between people that matter. I like to think that my style — with emphasis on feeling — can portray a wedding with some sort of honesty. It helps me when couples, like Suze + Matt, are open and able to live in the moment.
This wedding, followed by its gentle after party allowed me to get some ‘real sentiment’ across. Thanks Suze + Matt for staying true to who you are and choosing a destination and style of day that helped to bring this out.
